Diaspora DreamsBuilding Bridges Across Nations

Written by the diaspora

Diaspora Voices

Diaspora Dreams is built on real stories, and the best of them belong to you. Diaspora Voices is where readers tell their own — the family that crossed an ocean, the first Diwali far from home, the grandmother's recipe that survived the move, the object that made the journey when little else did.

You don't need to be a writer. Tell it plainly, in your own words, and our editors will help shape it. We read every submission, lightly edit the ones we run, and publish them here with your name — a growing archive of the diaspora, written by the diaspora.

Not sure where to start?

Pick a thread and pull on it. Any one of these is a story:

  • How did your family first leave India — and why?
  • The one object you (or your parents) carried across, and what became of it.
  • Your first festival away from home: what was lost, what was improvised, what was found.
  • The moment you realised you were 'the diaspora'.
  • A word, a dish or a song that still carries the old country for you.
  • Going back: what India was, and wasn't, when you returned to visit.
