‘Itihaas ki Sarhadein’: Rashmi Chaudhari and Devendra Choubey on the frontiers of history
A new Hindi book by historian Rashmi Chaudhari and JNU's Devendra Choubey — ‘Itihaas ki Sarhadein’ (Prakashan Sansthan, 2026) — argues that history is never bound by borders, and that the rural, pre-1857 past cannot be grasped by conventional historiography alone. A book note, in English and Hindi.
Itihaas kī sarhadeṅ — "the frontiers of history." The title of Rashmi Chaudhari and Devendra Choubey's new book is also its argument: that history is never bound within borders, and neither are the people who make it.
‘Itihaas ki Sarhadein’ (इतिहास की सरहदें), published by Prakashan Sansthan of Delhi in 2026, is described by its publisher as a singular book about the crossing of disciplinary borders in the world of thought — a work that tries to think through the questions of contemporary thought and history in a new way, and to bring them into some order.
Its method is deliberately unorthodox. Written in the registers of travel-writing, memoir and diary, the book sets out to understand the processes of historical change that have run through rural and urban India — and the wider world — over the past two or three decades. Working on the rural past through what they call "Creative History," the authors arrived at a conclusion that shapes the book: that the freedom struggles and the social life of the period before 1857 cannot be understood, or written, through conventional historical method alone.
The book's wager, the publisher's note says, is that human beings and their ideas have never been confined to a single enclosure — that the words attached to any new subject, and the people who carry them, are forever crossing boundaries. History, in this telling, is not a fenced field. What a reader takes away is less a settled account than a set of sources and threads with which to build their own historical understanding — one that can widen into the consciousness of larger social groups.
The authors give the claim weight. Rashmi Chaudhari is a historian — a first-class M.A. from Ranchi University and a doctorate on nationalism in folk-poetry from Jamia Millia Islamia — known for her work on rural history through "Creative History", and now president of the Creative History Trust in New Delhi. Devendra Choubey is a professor at JNU's Centre of Indian Languages and one of contemporary Hindi literature's significant figures — the same writer behind the Mauritius travelogue ‘Yah, Vah Desh To Nahin’ we noted recently.
For a diaspora publication there is a fitting detail. Both authors were honoured with the first Girmitiya Awareness Award (2025), established by GGLASC (Netherlands–India), for their work — a reminder that the study of ordinary, border-crossing lives is exactly the ground on which the diaspora's own history stands.
